Only in 2000 did he fail to qualify for the Olympic team, and in 1984, due to the Soviet-led boycott, he was unable to take part. In 1988, he won the gold medal, but disappointed in all his other Olympic participations. Wegner also won a medal of each color at World Championships, all with the skeet team.

In 1991, Wegner won the individual European Championships, and in 1992, 1996, 2003, and 2005, won skeet team title. He was the individual runner-up in 2002. In 1985, Wegner won the East German national title, and after re-unification was German champion in 1993, 2000, and 2007. By profession, Wegner was a driving instructor until re-unification, when he then worked as a buying agent for a construction company.
