Biography

Hong Kong civil servant José Lei was an architect and sports shooter. Lei joined the Hong Kong Institute of Architects in 1959 and went on to become the first director of the Architectural Services Department. In his role as chief architect Lei served as the designer of multiple buildings in Macau and Hong Kong including the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and the Hong Kong Museum of Arts.

As a sports shooter Lei competed at multiple international competitions. Lei represented Hong Kong in the small-bore rifle events at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. In addition to his Olympic appearance, Lei participated at the 1966, 1970, and 1974 Asian Games. In the 1989 Queen’s Birthday Honours Lei was made a Companion of the Imperial Service Order.
