Police officer Yoshihisa Yoshikawa was one of the best sports shooters in Japan during the 1960s and 1970s, winning multiple medals in the free pistol event. In 1960 Yoshikawa won bronze at the Roma Olympics, becoming the first Japanese athlete to win a medal in shooting at the Games. Four years later he repeated the feat, winning bronze at his home Olympics in Tokyo. Yoshikawa also competed at the Olympics in Mexico City and München, but did not replicate his previous success, placing 17th and 25th, respectively. He returned to the Olympics one more time, serving as the head coach of the Japanese shooting team at the 1976 Games in Montréal.
Yoshikawa had an even better record at the Asian Games, where he won four gold medals, including back-to-back titles in the 50 metres free pistol in 1962 and 1966. At the 1970 Games in Bangkok he won team gold in both the 25 metres centre fire pistol and the 50 metres free pistol events. He also won silver at the 1962 World Shooting Championships, finishing just two points behind Vladimir Stolypin (URS).
