Biography

South Korean Gang Jun-Ho began finding success in his amateur boxing career in 1949 and won the national featherweight championship the following year. Soon after he joined the military for a 13-year career, but he nevertheless attended the 1952 Summer Olympics and competed in the bantamweight category. He succeeded in capturing a bronze medal, but lost to silver medalist John McNally in the semifinal. He participated in the 1954 and 1958 Asian Games, but retired soon after and took up coaching. He was eventually selected as the coach of South Korea’s national amateur boxing squad and attended the 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics in this capacity. Under his supervision, the nation won a silver and bronze medal in the sport at the former Games. He continued leading the team at international events throughout the 1970s in addition to training professional boxers, including World Boxing Council champions Kim Sang-Hyun (light welterweight) and Park Chan-Hui (flyweight).
