Lev Sitin was born into the family of a Russian landowner and lawyer. While his parents moved to Moskva (Moscow) after the turn of the century, Lev graduated in Vilnius from the vocational school. In 1910 he began his studies at the Riga Polytechnic Institute at the Department of Chemistry and later switched to the Department of Architecture. However, he never completed his studies and resigned from the university in 1912. While studying, he joined the Āgenskalns Rifle Society (Hagensberger. Schuetzengesellschaft zu Riga).
Sitin participated in World War I and later worked for many years as a photographer at the State Darwin Museum in Moskva (Moscow) documenting the exhibits of the museum. He also designed illustrations for monographs and albums for other scientists and artists and invented several innovations related to photography.
In 1924, Sitin married his sister’s tutor, Lidiya Matasova. Together they had one son and one daughter.
