Biography

In his youth, Fred Hird was a top athlete, playing semi-pro baseball and boxing professionally In 1900 he joined the Iowa National Guard as a private, and rose through the army ranks until he retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1943. He was a veteran of the Mexican border campaign of 1914 and the first World War. From 1928 until 1936 he served two terms as U.S. marshall for southern Iowa and later served as a special agent for the Iowa attorney general’s office.
