Biography

Gary Winram was a distance freestyler who swam at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, making the final in both the 400 and 1,500 metre freestyles. Winram won two medals at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, with a silver in the 1,650 yard freestyle and bronze in the 440 yard freestyle.

Winram also competed in surf lifesaving, winning the Australian junior surf race crown with North Bondi in 1954, before going on to race on the National team at the Queen’s Carnival and touring South Africa.

In 1962 Winram started coaching and became one of Australia’s most respected swim coaches. In 2020 he was awarded the Platinum Level Coaching Award, especially for his achievements with Olympian Elli Overton. He was named New South Wales Coach of the Year in 1994 for his work with Overton.
