Biography

Gladys Luscombe attended the Torquay Grammar School for Girls, the same school that fellow Olympian Edith Mayne went to. Although known for being a leading diver, Luscombe’s aquatic career started as a freestyle swimmer, and at the age of 13 she won the 50 yards race at the Torquay Regatta. She made her international début at the age of 14 in 1923 and, just one year later, was appearing at the Paris Olympics in the springboard diving event, but failed to reach the final. Most of her diving successes were at the local rather than the national level. For a living, Luscombe worked in the family hotel in Torquay. Sadly she died when just 37-years-of-age after a long illness.
