The Welsh butterfly champion at the age of 14, Swansea Swimming Club´s Glenda Phillips finished fourth in the 110 yards at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games at Perth, Australia, two years later. Phillips never won a senior ASA title but came close with second-placed finishes in the 110 yards in 1963 and 1964, and 220 yards in 1966. She was also third in the 220 in 1967. Phillips went to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and was one of three British women to compete in the 100 metres butterfly, along with Mary Anne Cotterill and Judy Gegan. Phillips was, however, the only one of the three to win their heat but none of them progressed beyond the semi-finals.
Phillips retired in 1967 and became a swimming coach. The following year she married John Adams at Swansea. Phillips returned to competitive swimming after 20 years to compete in the 1987 Welsh Masters at Cardiff when she broke the world age group records in the 50 and 100 metres butterfly. She was a member of the wonderfully named Welsh G´Oldfish Club at the time. Phillips´ finest moment came in April 1964 during the international match against Russia at Blackpool when, along with Jill Norfolk, Diana Harris, and Sandra Keen, the quartet that set a new 4x110 yards medley relay record of 4:43.4.
