Robin Baskerville started diving at the Cottonmill swimming pool in St Albans after watching his brother dive in a scout’s competition. Robin, a good pole vaulter at the time, eventually joined the famous Highgate Diving Club and in 1968 joined the list of Highgate divers to compete at the Olympics.
Baskerville finished third behind defending champion Brian Phelps, and fellow Highgate club member John Miles, in the platform event at the 1966 national championships. That same year, Baskerville won the English Schools diving title. At the Mexico Olympics, Baskerville was classified 27th in the platform won by the legendary Klaus Dibiasi. Baskerville was runner-up in that year´s national championship to Blackpool´s David Priestley, who finished one place behind Baskerville at Mexico.
