A London butcher, Robert Hassell started his swimming career as a sprinter before turning to longer distances and in 1907 won the Southern Counties One Mile Championship. A few months later he took part in a race of just over 14 miles on the Rover Thames from Richmond Lock to the Surrey Bank, which was won by the long-distance champion of England Jack Jarvis. Hassell finished seventh. He lost his Southern Counties title to Tom Lusty in 1908, and finished second to Lusty the following year. Hassell was a former president of the Holloway United SC and was also a member of their water polo team.
