Biography

After the Olympic Games Zegwaard turned professional. In the 1920s he moved to Australia, but returned for a few years to the Netherlands. In 1937 he again left for Australia, but not able to obtain permanent residence or citizenship, Zegwaard eventually moved to South Africa. There he worked as a hotel barman, eventually dying of a barbiturate overdose. In his later career he also went by the names of “Jan van Houten” and “Ted Derwetter”.
