Biography

Uta Schmuck competed at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics in the 4x100 freestyle relay, representing East Germany. The GDR won the silver medal closely behind the USA team. With the medley relay she came in fifth in the final. Individually, she was eliminated in the semifinals of the 100 freestyle. Schmuck never won an East German national title.

After the games Schmuck was to be awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit but refused it. Although she was convinced to accept the order, she refused the bonus, and then immediately retired from competitive swimming, working as a casual laborer for years until she founded her own swimming school in 1999 at Frankenberg in Saxony.
