Biography

German swimmer Erna Herbers had a Dutch mother, and was born in Amsterdam, and grew up in Germany. Nevertheless she swam for a German club just across the border. She was a (West) German Champion in 1943 and 1948 but missed the 1948 London Olympics because Germany was excluded from them. At Helsinki in 1952 she was eliminated in the heats in the 100 backstroke. Herbers went on to win 13 more national titles. Herbers trained as a stenographer. She had moved to Germany in 1945, as her future husband was German, and in 1970 the family moved to Hilden.
