Biography

Stephanie Ortwig was a West German freestyle swimmer who reached the 200 and 400 metres freestyle, and 4x100 freestyle relay finals at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. However, she could only finish seventh in all three events. Over 800 metres freestyle, she placed 14th. Her greatest moment came in 1991 when she won the gold medal with the 4x200 metres freestyle relay at the World Championships.

In 1988, Ortwig won three national titles (200, 400 and 800 freestyle), while she won two gold medals, two silvers and two bronzes at the Youth Europeans that same year. The following two years, she again won the national 200 and 400 freestyle titles. Ortwig later trained as a breathing therapist and sports masseuse. She raised four children.
