Biography

Metello Savino was an Italian freestyle swimmer. Savino’s first appearance for the national team came at the 1981 European Championships in the 4 × 100 metres freestyle relay where the Italian team finished in fifth place. At the 1983 Mediterranean Games he won gold in the 4 × 100 metres freestyle relay with Marcello Guarducci, Andrea Ceccarini, and Stefano Corradi. The following year Savino was part of Italy’s team for the same event at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics where they finished in eighth place in the final. Savino was also scheduled to compete in the 4 × 200 metres freestyle relay but he did not start the race after the Italian team were disqualified in their heat.

After his competitive career Savino went on to set two masters records in the 100 metres freestyle and the 50 metres butterfly. He was also part of the 4 × 50 metres medley relay team that set a masters record in 2007.
