Biography

Willie Mason was involved with amateur boxing for more than 30 years since the time he joined the Perth YMCA in 1924. He held various administrative positions and also became well known as a boxing referee and judge, as well as Scotland team manager, and was a former president and life member of the Scottish ABA. Mason was considered as one of the officials for the 1948 Olympics, and he went on to officiate at the 1949 and 1950 ABA Championships and also several international matches around that time. Mason also refereed at the Oslo European Championship in 1949, and then went to the 1952 Helsinki Olympics as a judge and referee, where he had the honour of officiating in semi-final and final contests. The following year, he was one of the officials at the 1953 Warszawa (Warsaw) European Championships in 1953. By profession, Mason worked for a Perth firm of electrical engineers.
