Biography

Although Marcel Horteloup came from a well-known family of physicians, he graduated in law and initially worked for a bank. As a lawyer, he was an expert witness at the Civil Court of the Seine and an arbitrator at the Commercial Court.

Horteloup also wrote art critiques for various publications and member of the Syndicat de la Presse artistique. His article on the sculptor Rembrandt Bugatti, for example, became well-known and is often cited.

From 1902-1925, Horteloup was a government commissioner for the fine arts and organized numerous exhibitions of French art abroad, including the one in St. Louis in 1904. He was made a Knight of the Order of Vasa in Sweden and a Knight of the Legion of Honor in France. During World War I, he was awarded the Croix de Guerre.
