Biography

Soviet backstroke and medley swimmer Leonid Barbiyer set 15 national records and six European records during the 1950s and 1960s. At the 1958 European Aquatics Championships Barbiyer won gold in the 4 × 100 metres medley relay and an individual silver in the 100 metres backstroke. Four years later at the 1962 European Championships he won another gold medal, this time in the 200 metres backstroke.

In between his medal success at the European Championships Barbiyer swam at the 1960 Roma Olympics where he finished in fifth place in both the 100 metres backstroke and the 4 × 100 metres medley relay. He was a five-time national champion, winning four titles in the 200 metres backstroke (1957, 1959, 1961, 1962), and one in the 4 × 100 metres medley relay (1961). In 1963 Barbiyer was made an Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR.
