Biography

After taking the silver medal in the 100 m freestyle and the gold in the 4×100 m freestyle (with Molly Botkin, Shirley Stobs, and Chris von Saltza) at the 1959 Pan American Games, Joan Spillane placed third at the 1960 U.S. Final Trials but only swam in the relays at the Rome Olympics. She competed in the heats of the medley relay and the final of the freestyle relay where, swimming the first stage, she put the U.S. on their way to the gold medals and a new world record.
