Biography

Jack Babashoff was a sprint freestyler. He is the brother of Shirley Babashoff, and together they made up one of the top American brother-sister swimming combos. Jack attended the University of Alabama and he was at his best at the 1975 Pan American Games when he won two relay golds, and an individual silver in the 100m freestyle. In August 1977, in a dual meet against East Germany in East Berlin, Babashoff led off the American 4×100 freestyle relay team that broke the world record. He won a gold medal in the 4×100 free relay at the 1978 World Championships, setting another world mark. Babashoff was on a third world record setting relay team, in the heats of the medley relay at the Montréal Olympics.
