John Mykkanen competed at the 1984 Olympics just after graduating from high school, and was the youngest US male swimmer that year. He was a distance freestyler. Mykkanen later attended U Cal Berkeley, and then became a chiropractor in Orange County, California. His daughter, Courtney Mykkanen, also became a top swimmer and competed at the 2012 US Olympic Trials and 2014 Youth Olympic Games.
