Biography

After being forced to withdraw from the final of the individual 200m freestyle because of illness, Steve Rerych won a gold medal in both freestyle relays. Rerych, who attended North Carolina State, won his only AAU title when he took the indoor 100y freestyle in 1966. An outstanding athlete, Rerych also played baseball at NC State and pitched for them in the College World Series. He later attended medical school at Columbia, did his residency in general and thoracic surgery at Duke University Medical Center and later became a surgeon in Asheville, North Carolina and then in West Virginia.
