Biography

In his early career Jaroslav Šmíd won silver at the European Junior Volleyball Championships in both 1973 and 1975. From 1977 to 1986 Šmíd then represented the Czechoslovakia national team, competing at multiple international tournaments. In his first year with the team he won silver at the Summer Universiade in Sofia before finishing eighth at the 1980 Moskva Olympics. Šmíd won another silver medal at a major competition in 1985 when Czechoslovakia finished as the runners-up at the European Volleyball Championships in the Netherlands. Whilst he played for more than half-a-dozen clubs at home, his only championship title was the Austrian title with a club in Wein in 1990.
