Indian swimmer David Sopher was born in Bombay in 1929 and represented the Maccabi Water Polo Club in the early 1950s. Sopher was selected to represent India in the water polo tournament at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, playing in their qualifying match against Italy. Three years later he moved to England to start his post-graduate studies. Sopher eventually became a gynaecologist and was a pioneer in helping lesbian couples conceive.
