Moustafa Abdel Halim took up weightlifting in 1962 and within two years had won the flyweight division at the Cairo regional championships. He won his first Egyptian championship in that category the following year and captured the title over the next 10 editions. He joined the national team in 1968 and made his début at the World Championships in 1969, where he finished 12th. The following year, he failed to record a mark in the clean & jerk and thus did not place, which was also the result at his lone appearance for Egypt at the Olympics in 1976. He had much better luck at the Mediterranean Games, however, winning gold at the 1971 and 1975 editions, in addition to taking silver in 1979. By career, he was an employee of a cigarette factory.
