Jamaica-born weightlifter Gerry Perrin moved to England when he was aged nine. Living in the Camden area of London, he joined the Kentish Town Weightlifting Club and at the age of 19 was the No.1 ranked British junior, and in 1967 he won the senior British featherweight title. Perrin was selected for the 1968 Mexico Olympics, his first major international competition, but was not classified after failing to register a legal lift after missing all his presses. That disappointment, however, was forgotten at Edinburgh in 1970 when he won the featherweight gold medal at the British Commonwealth Games by beating Singapore´s Chua Phung Kim into second place. Perrin set a UK and Games record on his way to winning gold. By profession, Perrin was a dental technician.
