Biography

As a weightlifter, Gary Gubner placed third at the 1962 World Championships, and was second in 1965, both in the unlimited class. He was US National Champion in unlimited in 1966. Gubner was also an excellent shot putter and attempted to make the 1964 Olympic team in both track & field and weightlifting, but finished fifth at the U.S. Olympic Trials in the shot put. He had won the 1962 AAU Championship in the shot put, was second ranked on the 1962 world list with 19.78, and won three AAU Indoor titles in 1962-64. In 1962 he set three world indoor records in the shot put, including his personal best of 19.80. As a shot putter Gubner won the 1963-64 NCAA titles, representing New York University (NYU), and was second at the 1962 NCAAs.

His greatest tournament may have been the 1961 Maccabiah Games, where he won the shot put, discus throw, and heavyweight weightlifting. Gubner was inducted into both the US National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum and the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
