Biography

Dave Sheppard was a great US lifter in the 1950s but never could capture a World or Olympic title. Besides his Olympic silver, he was a four-time runner-up at the World Championships – 1951, 1953-54, and 1958. The loss in 1951 came to Pete George, who defeated Sheppard only on a countback for bodyweight – they lifted the same amount. Sheppard did manage to set five world records. He also won the 1954 and 1955 AAU middle-heavyweight titles, and was 1955 Pan American Champion in the middle-heavyweight division.
