Biography

Morgan Plumb got his start in wrestling in the early 1930s as a member of the Toronto West End YMCA. In 1937, he travelled to the trials for the 1938 British Empire Games at his own expense and earned a spot on the team, but was later scrubbed due a lack of funds to send him to Australia. World War II then interrupted his career, but he continued to stay in shape by wrestling in military tournaments as he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was therefore in prime condition to win the 1948 national championship represent Canada in the lightweight freestyle tournament at that year’s London Olympics, where he defeated Britain’s Peter Luck by decision in round one. He was then bested by upcoming bronze medalist Hermann Baumann of Switzerland and thereafter eliminated by Finland’s Sulo Leppänen. After winning the 1949 national title, he had much better luck at the 1950 British Empire Games, where he captured silver in the lightweight behind Australia’s Dick Garrard, who had been the 1948 Olympic welterweight silver medalist. Domestically, he won five Ontario provincial titles and three Canadian national ones.
