Biography

Hugó Payr won the Hungarian Greco-Roman middleweight wrestling title in 1904. He finished fourth in both the heavy and light-heavyweight categories at the 1908 London Olympics. That same year, he also finished fourth in the middleweight class at the inaugural World Championship at Wien.

Payr studied philosophy at the Pázmány Péter University, Budapest, and at the age of 22 became a journalist. During World War I he was a war correspondent and a journalist for the Budapest Hírlap.

Between 1919-39, he was a member in the Budapest city council, and from 1930 was a member of the Hungarian Parliament. In 1939, Payr withdrew from politics and became president of a stock company. In 1944, he participated in the anti-German resistance movement.
