Biography

Yushu Kitano competed at three major international tournaments during his career, winning a silver medal in each of them. He won freestyle flyweight silvers at the 1952 Olympics and 1954 World Championships and bantamweight silver at the 1954 Asian Games. Kitano was also the Japanese freestyle flyweight champion in 1952 and 1953. After finishing his sporting career, he worked as a wrestling coach, serving as coach of the Japanese 1960 Olympic team. Kitano later became a businessman and ran a sumo chaya, a traditional teahouse also selling sumo tickets and souvenirs and providing information to the fans, in Osaka from 1986-2006.
