Aleksandr Severov started wrestling in 1907 at the St. Petersburg Athletic Society. From 1912-15 he competed in Russian middleweight tournaments. He placed 2nd at the 1911 Russian Championships and claimed the title of the 75 kg division in 1914. At the 2nd All-Russian Olympiad in 1914, he won bronze.
He was considered the strongest wrestler in St. Petersburg at the beginning of the 20th century and was distinguished by his technical wrestling skills. In 1912, he had to withdraw from the competition in round 3 of the Greco-Roman middleweight A due to an injury.
Severov was also well-known as a midfield football player. In 1913, he founded the football club “Merkur” and was appointed team captain. His son Sergei played from 1952-55 as a defensive for “Zenit Leningrad”.
