Biography

Shamil Serikov took up wrestling in 1970 and was among the world’s best Greco-Roman bantamweight wrestlers in the late 70s. Serikov was Olympic Champion in 1980, World Champion in 1978-79 and European Champion in 1979. Serikov also won the 1978 Soviet title and ended his sporting career after placing fifth at the 1981 Europeans. After finishing his sporting career, Serikov worked as a wrestling coach in Kazakhstan, until he committed suicide.
