Biography

From Newark, New Jersey, and the National Turnverein, Ted McLear never finished higher than second at a major meet. At the 1902 AAU meet he was thrown by Fred Cook in 25 seconds. He had improved by 1904, and at the Olympics, he only lost in the final to Ben Bradshaw after 15 minutes of hard wrestling, which resulted in McLear receiving a bloody nose. McLear’s only other important medal came at the 1908 AAU meet when he was beaten by Olympic gold medalist, George Dole.
