Biography

Tomás Gutiérrez played guard for Puerto Rico at the 1964 and 1968 Olympic Games. He had an extensive international career, also playing at the 1963 and 1967 World Championships, the 1962 Central American and Caribbean Games, the 1963 and 1967 Pan American Games, and at CentroBasket in 1965. Gutiérrez won gold at the 1962 CAC Games and bronze at the 1962 Pan Ams, just missing a medal at the 1964 Olympics, when Puerto Rico finished fourth.

Gutiérrez played most of his career with Ponce Lions, from 1958-71, helping them win five league championships in 1960-61 and 1964-66. He also helped them win a Caribbean Series championship in 1958. He was the 1961 MVP in Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN). Gutiérrez finished his career in 1973, playing his last two seasons with Mayagüez.
