Biography

Gordon Ingate’s greatest moment in international sailing was probably the 1972 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, where he came in second behind American media magnate Ted Turner. That same year, he also represented Australia in the Tempest class at the Munich Olympics, where he placed 19th alongside Rob Thornton. In 1977, he competed in the America’s Cup, skippering Gretel II, but was eliminated by Sweden in the Challenger Trials. Domestically, he won national Dragon class championships in 2008, 2015, and 2018, the latter at the age of 91. He received the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2016 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from Australian sailing in 2020.
