Biography

Guillermo Newbery was an Argentine all-round track and field athlete who won multiple medals in South America during the 1920s. At the 1922 South American Championships in Athletics Newbery won gold in the 110 metres hurdles and shared silver in the pentathlon with Enrique Thompson. At the 1924 edition in Argentina he came away with three medals, again winning the 110 metres hurdles, along with silver in the decathlon and bronze in the javelin. These performances earned Newbery a spot on Argentina’s athletics team for the 1924 Paris Olympics. He ran in the 110 metres hurdles and the 4 × 100 metres relay but did not advance from the heats in either race. He was also scheduled to compete in the decathlon in Paris but did not start the event. After the Olympics Newbery won two more medals at the South American Championships, with a silver in the decathlon in 1926 and gold in the javelin in 1927.
