Biography

Rudolf Richter was a talented athlete and cyclist who later became one of the most important Czech sports organisers of his time. After graduation from the Praha Business Academy in 1902 Richter bought his first bicycle. Three years later he founded the Praha-Mochov-Praha cycling race where he either rode the course or acted as an official for the next 30 years. From 1903 until 1961 Richter was the head organiser of the Běchovice-Praha running race, the oldest road race in Europe.

At the 1912 Stockholm Olympics Richter represented Bohemia where he competed in the 10km racewalk, but did not finish in his heat. He was also scheduled to participate in the cross-country running event but did not start the race.

From 1919 to 1951 Richter was the treasurer of the Czechoslovak Olympic Committee (“Československý olympijský výbor”). During this time he helped to found the Jiří Guth-Jarkovský sports award in 1934 and the Czech Sports Museum in 1941. In addition to being celebrated in Czechoslovakia, Richter won recognition from around Europe, including a Belgian silver medal with a royal crown, the order of the Office d’Academie from the French government, and the Olympic Order, Second Class from the German government.
