Biography

Jane Haist took up athletics as a high school student in Canada and soon discovered her specialty in the discus throw. At the 1974 Commonwealth Games she won both that event and the shot put, and then took bronze in the discus at the 1975 Pan American Games, behind Carmen Romero and María Betancourt, both of Cuba. Her next stop was the 1976 Montreal Olympics, where she placed 11th in the discus. She then took her talents to the collegiate level with the University of Tennessee from 1977 through 1979, winning a collegiate title in discus in 1977 and coming in fourth in the shot put. That same year, she was the American national champion in the discus.

Haist’s last major podium finish came when she was runner-up in the AIAW discus event in 1978. She was a two-time All-American at the University of Tennessee and was inducted into their Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012. At the time of her death in 2022, she still held the university record for the women’s discus throw, which she set in 1977.

Personal Best: DT – 61.70 (1975).
