John Cameron was born in Lumsden, Scotland in 1886 and later moved to Vancouver. Cameron competed in track and field, with his focus being on the throwing events. He represented Canada at the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics in the hammer throw but failed to record a valid mark in the qualification round. A decade later he had better success in the same event at the 1930 British Empire Games in Hamilton where he won bronze. Cameron also competed in the shot put at the Games but his distance was not recorded.
