Biography

Art Jackes’ career in athletics was relatively short and began in earnest when he moved from Quebec to Ontario to attend the University of Toronto in the 1940s. By 1947 he had established himself as the Quebec provincial and Canadian intercollegiate champion in high jump and was representing his country internationally at many United States-Canada meets. In the lead-up to the Olympic trials he won the event at the 1948 Canadian National Championships, and his victory at the trials themselves earned him the right to represent Canada in the high jump at the 1948 Summer Olympics, where he placed 6th in a field of 27 competitors. He was victorious again at the 1949 National Championships and the trials for the British Empire Games, but finished tenth in the high jump at the 1950 edition of that tournament. Although he won the event at the 1950 National Championships, his performance was described as “mediocre” by the Ottawa Citizen, as it was three inches short of the national record at the time (and half an inch short of his winning height from the previous year). Jackes soon retired from active competition and later moved to the United States, where he died in November 2000.

Personal Best: HJ – 1.955 (1949).
