Tom McKay was born in Lucan, a suburb of Dublin, Ireland in 1900 before moving to Canada where he took up track and field athletics. McKay was a gifted middle-distance runner who became the national champion in the 800 metres in 1924, earning himself a place on the Olympic team. At the Paris Games he reached the semi-finals of the event but finished last in his heat to be eliminated. McKay was also listed as an alternate for the 4 × 400 metres relay but did not run in the race.
