In 1927 Pilling set a Canadian championship record, and representing the University of Utah in the US, he won the NCAA title, earning himself a place on the Olympic team. At the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics he finished 12th with a best throw of 59.16 metres in the qualification round. The same year Pilling also became the Canadian champion in the javelin.
