Biography

Canadian sportsman Doral Pilling was a fine all-round athlete who competed in baseball, boxing, badminton, and track and field. It was in the latter that he had the most success with him specialising in the javelin throw. In 1927 Pilling set a Canadian championship record, and representing the University of Utah in the US, he won the NCAA title, earning himself a place on the Olympic team. At the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics he finished 12th with a best throw of 59.16 metres in the qualification round. The same year Pilling also became the Canadian champion in the javelin. In 1930 he won silver at the British Empire Games in Hamilton, finishing second to Stan Lay of New Zealand. Two years later Pilling was selected to compete at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, but he did not start in the competition. He was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 1970.
