Biography

Denmark’s Gunnar Rasmussen was one of the best racewalkers of his time with him setting four world records and winning six national titles. Rasmussen won his first Danish title with victory in the 20km walk in 1914. He would go on to dominate the event, winning a further five titles (1918–19, 1921–23), and setting six national records. Rasmussen enjoyed a remarkable year in 1918 when he set world records in the 3,000, 5,000, and 10,000 metres, and also the 15km. Two years later Rasmussen competed in the 3,000 metres and 10km racewalks at the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics but he was disqualified in the heats of both events. He later emigrated to Canada and died in New York in 1945.
