Biography

Prior to his career as a businessman in Helsinki Leo Helgas was a middle-distance runner who represented HKV. Helgas had moderate success at the Finnish championships in both the 800 metres and the 1,500 metres. At the longer distance he won gold in 1929, along with silver in 1926, and bronze in 1928. In the 800 metres Helgas won silver in 1929 and 1930, and a bronze medal in 1926. He was also part of the quartet that won gold in the 4 x 1,500 metres at the 1930 championships. Helgas also competed at the 1928 Amsterdam Games where he ran in the 1,500 metres, finishing in fourth place in his heat and failing to advance to the final.

Personal Best: 1500 – 3:56.1 (1927).
