Biography

Maurice Fournier took up the high jump while doing his military training in Algiers. After his service, he returned to France, but not before winning a gold medal in that event at the 1955 Mediterranean Games, a feat that he would repeat in 1959. This led to him being selected to represent France at the 1956 and 1960 Summer Olympics, where he placed 11th and 14th respectively. He was also national champion in 1959, as well as in 1963. He equaled or improved the French record four times from 2.05 (May 13, 1956 in Algiers) to 2.07 (July 23, 1960 at the National Championships in Colombes). The latter only lasted a few minutes, as he was beaten by Mahamat Idriss, who won the 1960 French national title with 2.09 (Idriss competed as a Frenchman to 1961, before competing for Chad, the nation of his birth). He later worked as a real estate agent, but also remained active on the administrative side of sport.

Personal Best: HJ – 2.07 (1960).
