Biography

A basketball talent, Jean Perniceni was first selected for the French team in 1947, when he was only 17 years old. For the next decade he played 93 internationals for France. Competing at four European Championships, two World Championships and one Olympic Games, Perniceni won three international medals. These all came at the Europeans: silver in 1949, and bronze in 1951 and 1953. In 1954, the French were also close to winning a World Championship medal, finishing fourth. In domestic competition, he won four French titles, twice with Racing Club (1953, 1954) and twice with Charleville (1958, 1960), having also played for Avia (Paris), Monaco and Caen. Retiring from sports at age 38, Perniceni later worked in town planning, a car sales and real estate. In 2009 he was honoured by the French basketball federation as “académicien du basket”, the equivalent of hall-of-fame induction.
