Ignacio Poletti played basketball as a student at Colegio Nacional Simón de Iriondo and began his club career with República del Oeste in 1947. The following year he joined Rivadavia Juniors and stayed with them through 1950, winning a national title in 1949. He then joined Racing Club and remained with them until 1956, capturing another national title in 1953. As a part of the Argentine national team, he won his first major international medal, silver, at the 1951 Pan American Games, and went on to compete at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. There, Argentina lost the bronze medal match against Uruguay and placed fourth. He was also a reserve with the squad that won the 1950 World Championships, but he did not see any playing time. In 1957, the amateur status of numerous Argentine basketball players, including Poletti, was revoked by FIBA for having received money from the government for his performance. He later worked as a coach for Racing Club and Yupanqui.
