Biography

A finalist in both sprints at the 1923 AAA Championships, Tom Matthewman finished third in the 100y, won by Eric Liddell in a record 9.7, and his second place in the 220y, again behind Liddell, was his best performance at the Championships. In 1924 and 1925 he won both sprints at the English AAA Championships. Matthewman defeated all the leading sprinters of his time and in 1923 he beat Eric Liddell twice in one weekend, first at Ibrox on the Saturday and than at the British Games at Stamford Bridge on Monday. That year he also beat Harold Abrahams in Manchester and London. After being put in charge of fitness training for the Huddersfield Rugby League Club, he later served as chairman of the club.
